Expert Q&A

Q. I got a new computer and printer for Christmas and want to recycle the old ones. What’s the easiest way to do this?

A. If your equipment is still in decent working order, it’s a nice idea -- and super-easy -- to donate it to the needy through the National Cristina Foundation (Cristina.org). You simply fill out a form online, and this nonprofit group matches you up with a school or another organization in your area that needs computers, printers and other kinds of electronics. They even arrange for the recipient to pick up the equipment -- and you get a receipt to use as a tax deduction.

Goodwill also takes donations of many types of electronics. Just remember to delete all your personal information beforehand to keep your identity safe. If your equipment is no longer working, recycling is a cinch. My first recommendation is to visit Earth911.com and do a search for “computer recycling” to find what’s available near you, what other things they accept (such as other electronics, or ink and toner cartridges), how to get there and if they have any other stipulations.

There are probably more recycling opportunities available in your area than you think. For example, many national retailers, such as Best Buy and Staples, have programs that can recycle your old e-waste. You may have to pay a small fee (about $10), but stores often provide gift cards in the same amount in return.
