The Cleaning Cheat Sheet

By Nancy Kalish

Send this article to a friend

Feel like you never stop cleaning? A 2008 University of Michigan survey found that American women scrub their houses an astonishing average of 17 hours a week, and (no surprise) their spouses spend a lot less time with a sponge. The good news: “Such drudgery is totally unnecessary,” says Jeff Bredenberg, author of How to Cheat at Cleaning: Time-Slashing Techniques to Cut Corners and Restore Your Sanity. Follow his tips to make short work of your housework.

Keep Dirt Outside
Establish a no-shoe rule inside your home, and you’ll prevent all kinds of muck from ever touching your floors. Place a basket by the front door and ask everyone to deposit footwear there.

Cover up
Using washable slipcovers on couches and upholstered chairs won’t prevent spills, but it will keep them from becoming a permanent stain. If you can’t bear to cover up all the time, use the slipcovers on high-risk occasions, such as kids’ parties (think: drippy chocolate ice cream and sticky lollipops) or holiday gatherings (red wine and salsa). So many colors and styles are available that you don’t even need to spring for custom-made ones. Just make sure you can pop them in the washing machine.

Get a Disposable Countertop
Next time you cook something messy, cover the counter with wax paper. It will keep your space clean when you grate cheese, set down a sauce-covered spoon or bake cupcakes. Afterward, just crumple up the paper -- and the mess.

Make Appliances Clean Themselves

  • Food processor or blender Fill half with water, add a squirt of dishwashing liquid, close lid and turn on. The food will spin off the blades. Then just rinse.
  • Garbage disposal Empty a tray of ice cubes into the disposal, throw in some orange peels, then grind until ice disappears. Any bad smells will go with it.
  • Microwave Heat two cups of water in a microwave-safe bowl on high for five minutes. The steam will loosen cooked-on splatters. Then simply wipe away with a paper towel.

Buy Denture Tablets
Throw one into your toilet bowl to make stains vanish overnight. The next morning, just brush a tiny bit and flush. Denture tablets also remove coffee and tea stains from mugs and get rid of crusty buildup in the bottom of flower vases. Just fill with hot water and drop one in.

Get Rid of Pet Hair
If you have a dog or cat, you probably also have a couch or drapes covered with clingy pet hair. To remove it easily, warm a dryer sheet and rub it over the material. This zaps the static cling, allowing the hair to fall off so it can be vacuumed up quickly.

Can It
Don’t waste time trying to dust the crannies of computer keyboards or piano keys. Instead, just give the dust a fast blast with a can of compressed air -- sold at office supply stores. This also works on pleated lampshades and chandeliers.

Know When to Stop
No matter how much you scrub, certain household items, such as door mats, stovetop drip pans and shower curtains, will never come completely clean. So when they get too soiled, bite the bullet and replace them.

To clean sink traps

Put 2 TBLS of baking soda down trap in sink. Pour about a cup of vinegar on top. Wait about ten minutes and flush with a pitcher of cold water. It works, I do it about once a month.

Coffee pot stains - and lots more!

Powder dishwashing cleaner (for dishwashers) is a miracle cleaner. If you have coffee stains in your coffee carafe (especially stainless steel), put a few tablespoons and soak overnight - the next day, gently rub and ALL the stain is gone. I use powered dishwashing cleaner for ALL my tough stains and cleaning. It usually works best to allow the solution to soak the problem area for a little while before wiping clean, but it is a powerful cleaning solution to use on a wide variety of surfaces. If there's anything you're having trouble getting clean, try it.

nail polish

Any ideas on the best way to remove nail polish?? My grandson spilled purple polish on beige carpet today! We were able to get alot of it up with paper towels and then used nail polish remover and more towels.Still down in (its a short plush carpet)there's alot but only some slight pink look on the top. Not bad considering, but if anyone has suggestions on how to finish it up I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Cleaning hard water stains

To clean around your faucets soak a wash cloth or paper towel in vinegar, wrap around faucets or where hard water stains are and let set for a couple of hours or overnight if needed. Wipe clean. Good to use on shower doors just wipe down shower door with a sponge that you put vinegar on.

How to remove grime on faucets

I got this tip from watching the TV show how clean is your house, and it is very usefull. Items: Toilet paper Vinegar Process: Before starting to clean bathroom and/or kitchen. Soaks several sheets of toilet paper with vinegar. Place the wet toilet paper over the faucets and around the chrome of the faucets around the sink and all the chrome and faucets on the tub and shower. Then while the sheets are on those areas, clean your bathroom and kitchen. Then when you are finished, remove the toilet paper off of the faucets and chrome. They will be sparkly clean. What happens is the vinegar is the key in this cleaning process. The vinegar will eat all the gunk and grime off of the chrome putting it into the toilet paper. When you finish doing the room, you remove the toilet paper and your faucets and chrome will shine very bright with no residue on the chrome.

Try 1/2 part hydrogen peroxide and 1/2 water in a spray bottle. Stronger hydrogen peroxide for tougher cleaning jobs.

removing shoes indoors

Don't walk around with socks - this can be a safety hazard. Also, if you walk through a kitchen area with crumbs, or doggy hair, you will just track them all over the house. Use house slippers

stains on carpet

Use old towel saturated with "rubbing alcohol" to scrub out stubborn stains from carpet - even grape or blueberry juice! This has worked on every stain I've ever found on my carpets/rugs with NO color loss.

easy microwave cleaning

Put a mug almost full of water into the micro, turn on for 2 to 3 minutes, the steam will loosen all the goop up. I add a little lemon juice to the water to make it smell good.
